Bunkers
- Washed out areas: If no relief is available within the bunker, player may drop outside the bunker on the line of play with one penalty stroke
- Stones are loose impediments and may be removed
– If the ball moves while doing so, there’s a penalty and the ball must be replaced
Wrong Putting Greens
If there’s interference from a wrong green, the player must take free relief for lie, stance, and swing.
No Cart Areas
Marked with yellow ropes and may be played as ground under repair – free relief allowed.
No Play Zone
Includes cultivated areas like:
- Flower beds
- Newly planted trees or shrubs
Free relief must be taken no closer to the hole, and you must not stand in or swing through the no-play zone.
Local Rule in Effect for All Events – USGA Model Local Rule E-5 Alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds
Lost Ball or Out of Bounds: When a ball is lost or out of bounds and no provisional ball was played, players may take relief by dropping a ball near the point the ball was lost or exited the course. This option comes with a two-stroke penalty and helps speed up play.
Relief involves estimating:
- The spot where the ball was lost or went out of bounds
- The nearest edge of the fairway not nearer the hole
Then dropping the ball between those two points, no nearer the hole.
Note: This rule does not apply if a provisional ball was already played or the ball is in a penalty area.
